Prospects 2008 MBA Guide - (Page 23) BOURNEMOUTH UNIVERISTY BUSINESS SCHOOL MBA KARL BYGRAVE FINDS INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS WITH HIS MBA Karl completed his MBA at BU’s Business School in June 2004 and is now a Director at an international cosmetics company, Lush Limited. Since joining Lush, his role has evolved and he currently looks after company development of the Middle East. He is responsible for building and coaching management teams and advising on intellectual property. I’d been fortunate enough to gain a wide variety of work experience but always felt that I lacked formal recognition of my skills. An MBA was both a way of checking how my experience stacked up and a validation. I also enjoy learning new stuff, seeing how others do business and I find the interaction with other managers very stimulating. I had considered other business schools but the scope of the course at BU suited me and I was able to study part time so I could always balance work, study and family life. I was lucky enough to have been given large responsibilities in my job from a young age and so I felt I had a broad range of experience, although predominately in one industry sector. I had taken a number of management courses but none carried a qualification, so I came to the MBA with only five GCEs and a lot of enthusiasm. I really didn’t know what to expect and was quite worried at first but you quickly get into a routine. The main thing is to realise that the advice given by the lecturers about handling deadlines should be listened to. You have to set aside enough time to be able to keep up with the work. My children were quite young when I was completing my MBA, so getting some peace and quiet at home was probably the biggest issue. The final dissertation also required me to shut myself away. The time soon passed, however. I think I managed the balance, just about. I have more confidence in my own ability. I had not gone to university so I only had my experience to go on, but doing an MBA showed me that my experiences were valid and my decision-making skills were sound. The MBA helped my career progress enormously, especially in my appreciation of management accounting and corporate governance. Also, I have taken the opportunity to gather advice from a number of fellow MBA students on their areas of expertise. PROSPECTS MBA GUIDE 23
