Prospects 2008 MBA Guide - (Page 4) MBA SUCCESS AT BATH SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT UNIVERSITY OF BATH SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT - STANDING OUT FROM THE CROWD Nurturing the talents of Sainsbury’s CEO, Justin King, and ex-Pulp guitarist Russell Senior, among others, the Management School at the University of Bath is one of the longest established business schools in the country. It has a pretty good MBA programme too, as Joanne O’Connor found. NOEL LOCK ANDREW PETTIGREW The School of Management burst onto the business scene in 1968. Since then it has become one of the best in the country, ranked fourth by the Guardian and fifth by the Times. Its MBA programme is among the best in the world (Financial Times and Economist Intelligence Unit’s Which MBA?) with links to more than 150 organisations, which is good news for students who want to work on some real projects. Accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA) and EQUIS, the Bath MBA introduces students to the key requirements of business. But it is more than just a ‘toolkit’. The programme offers a socially responsible and ethical approach to management, an area of research Bath has pioneered. The School has just been placed third in the ‘Beyond the Grey Pinstripes’ rankings, a survey that looks at how well the social and environmental issues are incorporated into MBAs. CAREERS BUILT IN But one of the School’s biggest talking points Scheme. Students work on live cases, supplied by organisations such as Lloyd’s, Boots, Coca-Cola, Balfour Beatty, Motorola, Hewlett Packard, RAC and BAE Systems. But it’s not just the blue chips who get involved; the School has a long history of working with local government, the health service, NGOs and charities. The NHS and the Ministry of Defence regularly send staff on the programme. ‘We are a full service Management School and do not see the MBA as an exclusive programme for business,’ says Andrew. Bath’s service to public sector staff is confirmed by Mandy Bradley who is studying her MBA part-time alongside her fulltime job as a service manager for Kennet District Council. ‘The School has an excellent reputation and the programme is helping me with issues related to HR and customer operations. My work at the Council is heavily customer focused, and I have been able to use my skills with this,’ she says. For Noel Lock, the School’s commitment to entrepreneurship is its focus on careers. The University has a strong reputation in proved to be invaluable. After selling his first business at the age preparing students for employment. Bath was the first of 26, Noel spent time travelling and looking into new ventures. institution in the UK to offer work placements, a strength that ‘Whilst waiting for another business idea to come to fruition, I is being utilised in the School of Management, says the School’s decided that an MBA would develop my skills and possibly lead Dean, Andrew Pettigrew. me to someone interesting that I could set up with,’ says Noel. ‘The University has always been keen on two things; students get a strong intellectual training, and that they should learn from experience,’ explains Andrew. And this works from undergraduate level right up to the MBA. Practical experience is gained through the Business Projects 4 PROSPECTS MBA GUIDE ‘Bath appealed to me most because it offered the Claverton Entrepreneurship in Action project, which encourages students to come up with realistic business ventures. ‘This sounded more entrepreneurial than what was offered at other business schools that focused more on a career in the City.’ http://www.bath.ac.uk/management
