Prospects 2008 MBA Guide - (Page 5) A BUSINESS PLAN Noel’s MBA plan turned out to be a success, as learning, says DYMC coordinator and lecturer in Organisational Behaviour Svenja Tams. ‘MBA students typically want to learn the language of important, but DYMC offers students the chance to set their own learning agenda; how they learn, what they need to improve, how they engage with people and what their career goals are,’ explains Svenja. ‘This encourages them to focus on what it is they want out of the programme and ultimately how to become better managers.’ Guided by a mentor, students work on critical thinking, leadership, reflective practice, and communication skills as part of this stream. Craig Collingwood, a chartered accountant from Swindon, is coming to the end of his MBA. At first he was unsure about the value of DYMC. ‘I found it strange at first, talking about myself and analysing everything I did, but I soon realised the benefits of it. I always thought I was financially driven but this has made me realise what my values really are and where my strengths and weaknesses lie.’ Even before having completed his MBA, Craig, who runs the finance department at Cardinal Health, has already been promoted to look after a group of businesses across the US and Europe. ‘The programme has given me confidence and allowed me to identify what my goals are, which is helping me to become a better manager.’ well as meeting his wife on the course, he found his business partner, Ingram Legg. a career out of it and Ingram’s passion was cars - he had been a racing car driver – and so that led us to environmental cars!’ A chance conversation about congestion charging in London led Noel and Ingram to their bright idea. ‘I overheard people at a party taking about how to get round the congestion charge,’ explains Noel. ‘One of the things that came up was that if you converted your car to LPG you wouldn’t have to pay. I knew Ingram had done some work on LPG before and so we looked at the possibility of converting cars to LPG.’ With the support of the School, Noel and Ingram were able to spend time researching their business and, after a lot of hard work, Greenfuel was born. They are now happily converting cars to LPG. ‘The MBA was really influential in getting the company up and running,’ says Noel. ‘Being surrounded by staff who knew what they were talking about was really helpful, not to mention the networks I built.’ DEVELOPING INDIVIDUALS In keeping with the focus on careers, ‘I was really interested in the environment and wanted to make business, operations management, for example. This is students are also benefiting from career coaching, a new strand that has been added to the programme.
