TEACHER TRAINING AND EDUCATION Postgrad 47 FEES AND FUNDING One area in which tax-free bursary of £9,000 (if they are training to teach key stage 2 and 3 classes in maths, science, English, ICT, design and technology, modern languages, religious education or music) or £6,000 (if they are training to teach in primary schools or another key stage 2 and 3 subject). There are similar bursaries for students studying in Wales: £7,200 for those studying maths and science, and a teaching grant of £5,000. For modern languages, design and technology, information communications technology, Welsh, music, and religious education, you will receive £7,200 and a teaching grant of £2,500. For art, geography, history and physical education and English (including drama), you will receive a training grant of £4,200 but are not eligible to receive a teaching grant. Scotland may offer you a Scottish Studentship if you are doing one of the subjects they are targeting. STARTING SALARIES The fees you pay and small differences could have a big impact is money. And the picture is far from straightforward, so you would be advised to research your own situation carefully. For example, people normally living in Scotland choosing to study in Scotland do not have to pay fees, but people normally living in another UK nation but studying in Scotland have to pay fees of £1,775 a year. While until recently students in Northern Ireland did not pay fees, as of September 2008, institutions in Northern Ireland can charge tuition fees of up to £3,145 to all new full-time ITE students, including graduates commencing PGCE courses. All eligible students can choose to defer payment of their fees by taking out a fee loan which they will repay when they leave higher education and have an income of over £15,000. To cover this, you could take out a student loan. However, according to the GTTR, all providers in England who charge the maximum give you a £300 grant towards this. Furthermore, students normally resident in England who are starting a PGCE in September 2009 may be eligible for a maintenance grant of up to £2,835. So technically, you could cover your fees completely if you got all three. Students starting courses in England in September 2009 can also receive a the grants available depend on where you normally live and where you do the course, but what you get when you start working depends on where you land your probationary teaching role. In Scotland, salaries currently start at £20,000 with an extra allowance for remote areas in the Highlands and Islands of between £1,074 and £2,010. From September 2008, a newly qualified teacher in England and Wales will earn a minimum of £20,627 (£25,000 in inner London) but could start higher up the scale depending on previous experience. If you chose to teach a shortage Trainees starting primary postgraduate subject in England or Wales you could be eligible for a ‘golden hello’ as well – courses after September 1, 2008 can receive a training grant of £2,200. If you normally live in Wales and are also studying there, you may also be entitled to a tuition fee grant of £1,890, which does not have to be paid back. There is also a Welsh-medium incentive payment of £1,500 (£1,800 for those teaching maths and science) if you do your ITT in Welsh but need some assistance in improving your use of the language. Providing you have not done another postgraduate course before, the Student Awards Agency for £2,500 if you are doing English, ICT, design and technology, languages, RE or music or £5,000 if you’re teaching maths or science. But beware. These won’t be tax-free. By then you’ll no longer be a student… you’ll be a teacher.
