Several senior members of staff have close links with industrial partners in biomedical fields close to their research interests (e.g. diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and neurodegenerative disorders). The high level of potential application in LIGHT’s research partnerships and commercial opportunities. ARE THERE ANY OPPORTUNITIES FOR WORK EXPERIENCE? understand disease mechanisms at the molecular and cellular level, and to elucidate the interactions between genetic and environmental factors in the causation and progression of disease. This approach allows opportunities for rapid transfer of research knowledge to public health or clinical settings in order to reduce disease incidence, morbidity and mortality. As part of the University of Leeds, the Institute has a major commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. The LIGHT subscribes to the University’s principle that the transfer of new knowledge to students is a core aim of a research-intensive organisation. Students at the LIGHT learn from academics at the cutting edge of international research and gain access to the latest scientific methods and technologies, whilst learning skills and techniques to support future career paths. WHERE DO YOUR STUDENTS GO ON TO WORK? The Institute was established in 2004 and is based in two linked buildings on the University of Leeds campus, the Medical School (Worsley Building) and the LIGHT laboratories. The LIGHT laboratories represent a £10million investment, opened in October 2004, with research space for laboratory scientists and clinical researchers. portfolio lends itself to development through HOW MANY PROGRAMMES ARE OFFERED? MSc Medical Physics, MSc Medical Imaging, MSc Clinical Embryology, MSc Nutrition, Obesity and Health and (starting in 2009) MSc Statistical Epidemiology. Institute staff also supervise research postgraduates, and contribute to undergraduate medical teaching and continuing professional development programmes (e.g. molecular epidemiology, basic and advanced medical statistics courses). A variety of generic and specialist training courses are provided for postgraduate research students, along with symposia and conferences to develop students’ skills in presenting their research. WHAT FUNDING IS ON OFFER FOR STUDENTS? Due to the nature of the research carried out in the LIGHT, the opportunity for work experience is limited, although internships are available from time to time. Individuals wishing to apply should see the website for more information on research specialities, and make enquiries to the Head of Division in their area of interest. HOW MANY POSTGRADUATES DO YOU TAKE ON EACH YEAR? Each taught Masters course takes between 12 and 25 students. The MSc Clinical Embryology is a two-year part-time distance learning course with workshops in Leeds. The other courses are usually full time, but can be studied part time by arrangement with course tutors. Many of the taught postgraduate courses offered in the LIGHT are to support employment. Most of the students taking part in Clinical Embryology and Medical Physics courses do this as part of their Postgraduate students at the University of Leeds benefit from around £10million of University and external funding. A wide variety of scholarships and bursaries are available to Home, EU and International students. From 2009 there will be two LIGHT PhD studentships awarded on a competitive basis. The Nutrition, Obesity increase the numbers by attracting more students on external fellowships. WHAT FACILITIES ARE ON OFFER? and Health and Statistical Epidemiology courses are new, aiming to support and equip students for careers in healthcare research or industry. CONTACT DETAILS FOR ADMISSIONS The focus of the LIGHT’s research is common chronic disorders, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer and neurodegenerative disorders. The research spans investigations of the underlying disease mechanisms, population studies of disease aetiology, through to prevention strategies, health services research and the development of novel therapeutics.
