The School excels in research and teaching in all of its constitutive academic areas. All departments scored highly in the last Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), and were ranked as excellent by the Quality Assurance Agency for their teaching. The constituent departments are recognised by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) for postgraduate work in all academic areas, representing excellence in research training and supervision. Research excellence is a hallmark of the School, and all programmes are taught by leaders in their fields. This means that the programmes are always stimulating and inspiring, offering the best preparation for employment or further research. The disciplines within the School of Social Sciences have been taught at Brunel since the early 1970s. In addition, EU students are eligible for ESRC competition awards for recognised programmes and PhD study. For international students, a number of scholarships and bursaries are awarded each year through Brunel International - the University’s specialised department, which looks after the interests of our large community of international students. In addition, international students have studied in the School under the Chevening Scholarship scheme. EMPLOYMENT PROSPECTS London or in Brussels, giving students work experience to add to their CVs. All of our programmes help students further develop analytical and research skills that can be applied in a wide range of careers. Our students enter into a wide variety of professions as well as in further academic study. Examples include: careers in political consultancy; political research for MPs and NGOs; banking and finance; teaching and education; social work; counselling; educational and child psychology; social and public policy; the development sector, and major international organisations such as the World Health Organisation. UNIVERSITY FACILITIES The School has many links with industry. Our unique MSc in Public Affairs and Lobbying is a prime example of this. The programme features regular presentations from practitioners, as well as an internship, which can be done either in The University has a Graduate School, of which all postgraduates become members. Over and above the excellent computing, library and study facilities at the University, postgraduates have access to the additional exclusive facilities in the Graduate School. Both the School of Social Sciences and the Graduate School offer training programmes in research, and personal and professional development.
