Prospects Postgrad UK 2007/2008 - (Page 115) SPONSORED BY www.prospects.ac.uk/PostgradUK SOCIAL SCIENCES 115 SCHOOL OF SOCIAL SCIENCES HEALTHCARE IN THEUK Yana Dautova came to the UK to improve her English. After studying for her A-Levels, she decided to complete a BSc in Pharmacology and then an MSc in Nutrition Physical Activity and Public Health at the University of Bristol. I decided to continue my education in the UK because a degree from a UK University is recognised all over the world. I completed my first degree in Bristol and I immediately fell in love with the city. It is a very beautiful, lively place with an extraordinarily diverse culture. Moreover, the University is well known for conducting world-class research. MASTERING STUDY After having completed my first degree, I knew I was not ready to start working just yet and I wanted to continue with my studies. However, taking up a three-year PhD course was a big commitment and I wanted to experience something a bit different. This is how I came across the MSc in Nutrition Physical Activity and Public Health. It seemed only natural to me to continue with my Masters in the city and the University I loved. Plus, the modules offered seemed to cover a variety of topics I was interested in. The departmental staff and students were very friendly and the lectures were very interesting with several external speakers giving excellent new information on the research going on in the field of public health. I am very pleased that I chose to do this course and would recommend it to anyone thinking of a career in health promotion. Studying my Masters was very different in terms of the amount of free time I had. It allowed me to undertake some voluntary jobs, which I always wanted to do whilst studying. I gained a lot of knowledge and different experience from my course and learned something new about myself - that I am very good at working with people I hardly know! This is why I particularly enjoyed planning and working for my final dissertation on ‘Effect of Physical Activity at work place on Blood Pressure’. Seeing the beneficial effect of my research on people made me think that I can make a difference, and that is one of the best feelings anyone can get. STUDENT SUPPORT When I first started I got a lot of support from my tutor, lectures and other students. I did not feel as if I was an international student because Bristol draws many students from all over the world and is a great place to experience different cultures. I found that one of the best ways to meet people was through numerous clubs and societies that are run by the students. I joined the Latin-American, ballroom dancing and Slavonic societies when I first arrived and would recommend it to everyone who is new in Bristol. I truly enjoyed my time at Bristol; the study was interesting and the teaching was of the highest quality. At the moment I am studying for a PhD in Physiology at the University of Cambridge, which I enjoy very much. I know that after having finished my studies I will have a broad range of careers to choose from, which is thanks to a unique multidisciplinary insight I gained at Bristol into disease prevention and treatment. http://www.prospects.ac.uk/PostgradUK
