Prospects Postgrad UK 2007/2008 - (Page 57) SPONSORED BY www.prospects.ac.uk/PostgradUK SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING 57 STUDY IN THE CITY Ali Imran Khan worked as a Research Associate for a government organisation in Pakistan before securing a scholarship to study a PhD at the University of Manchester. In my view, the University of Manchester is a leading university in research and is located in one of the most vibrant and cosmopolitan cities in Europe. The University’s degree programmes are career-oriented, many of which have direct input from industry, which means graduates are of an extremely high standard and well sought after. SKILLS FOR EMPLOYMENT CITY LIFE While studying at Manchester, I received a top-class education but also important skills, knowledge and experiences that boosted my career prospects. During my first year, I got involved in a number of activities, all of which gave me extra skills to add to my CV. Being a member of research organising committee, I was actively involved in the successful completion of the Research Open Day at the school of MACE held in November 2005. I also assisted undergraduate and postgraduate students in their research work, invigilated a number of exams, conducted a workshop at postgraduate level and worked as a steward in the graduation ceremony held at University. Manchester is emerging as one of the UK’s leading centres for learning, culture, entertainment, and sport. It truly is a multicultural city with a variety of traditions and ethnicities living together. The city’s parks are great places to spend time in but travelling to the coast and countryside is also cheap and easy. If you fancy getting away from the hustle and bustle of the city, the beautiful coasts and countryside are ideal places to relax. In the city centre there are plenty of international restaurants. I never find any difficulty in finding Pakistani food. There are plenty of Halal and vegetarians retailers in the city. Also, the Curry Mile in Rusholme is host to over 50 restaurants, serving delicious Pakistani food. Manchester is home to people of many religions and faiths. Prayer rooms are provided on campus and there are number of Mosques located near the University. I never have any problem finding a place for prayer on or off campus. Manchester is in ideal location in the North West to explore the nearby coasts of Blackpool, Southport and the countryside of Lake District and Peak District, all of which can be reached on a day trip.
