The creation of The University of Manchester following the unification of UMIST and Victoria University of Manchester (VUM) in 2004, brought together the Corrosion and Protection Centre (UMIST), the Manchester Materials Science Centre (UMIST/VUM) and the Department of Textiles and Paper (UMIST) to become the new School of Materials. HOW MANY MASTERS ARE OFFERED? By working closely with industry, the School offers courses that are at the forefront of scientific and industry practice. The courses are taught by internationally renowned experts in their field, comprising members of the School’s academic staff and leading industrial practitioners. ARE THERE OPPORTUNITIES FOR WORK EXPERIENCE? Students have the option to complete a dissertation in industry, which will be supervised by an industrial and an academic tutor. Although there is no guarantee of a company sponsored dissertation, many of the School’s industrial partners offer this opportunity to students, enabling students to gain real industry experience. Students can also, with the support of a tutor, make their own contacts with companies they would be interested in working with on a dissertation. HOW MANY POSTGRADS DO YOU TAKE ON EACH YEAR? To underpin the research and teaching activities, the School has established state-of-the-art laboratories, which allow comprehensive characterisation and development of materials. These facilities range from synthetic/textile fibre chemistry to materials processing and materials testing. To complement teaching resources, there is a comprehensive range of electrochemical, electronoptical imaging and surface and bulk analytical facilities and techniques. WHERE HAVE PAST STUDENTS GONE ON TO WORK? Graduates of the School are highly sought after and widely employed across a diverse range of industry sectors.
