It became the fourth Scottish University. In 1916, the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce encouraged the University to consider instituting a degree in commerce. This resulted in the Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) degree in 1918 and led in time to the creation of the Department of Business Studies and the Department of Accounting and Business Method. The first lectures in political economy started in 1800 and the Economics Honours degree was introduced in 1898. It was not until the Faculty of Social Sciences was created in 1963 that political economy became a department separate from moral philosophy. In 1966, the department acquired the title, 'Economics'. In 2002 the departments of Accounting, Business Studies and Economics were formed into one School - Management School and Economics. The MBA was first offered in 1980 and the first of our growing MScs in 1996. city's geographic environment provides a stunning natural backdrop with a wealth of parks and open spaces.
