Postgrad UK 2008/2009 - (Page 67) www.prospects.ac.uk/PostgradUK Science and Engineering 67 The coastal route Ismael Mariño Tapia came to the UK to start his Masters in Applied Marine Science at the University of Plymouth. His enthusiasm to learn about the ocean resulted in an offer to stay on to complete a PhD in Marine Sciences. The ocean has always excited me. The feeling of a wave approaching and embracing you as it breaks and takes you for a ride has always been magnetic. On the other hand, the ocean is a source of many resources that mankind is only just learning to use properly. Knowledge of its power is essential for us to use the seas in a better way. During my PhD I learned about sediment transport processes on high-energy beaches, field measurements, data processing and numerical modelling of coastal processes. After completing my PhD I was offered a Postdoctoral position on the EU project COASTVIEW, applying video remote sensing to coastal management issues. I joined Plymouth because of its Coastal Processes Research Group; their expertise on coastal science, their enthusiasm about the ocean, their capability of interaction within themselves and top research groups abroad and their creative thinking that drives them to push science ahead. OCEAN GOING My training in England with us. I have research funding on three research projects looking into beach dynamics at Cancun, hydrodynamics of coastal lagoos, and land-sea water exchanges through submarine cenotes, which are freshwater springs at sea! We run an oceanographic buoy that gives realtime conditions. I am busy, doing well and happy. My long-term goal is to contribute with the understanding of how the ocean works, and to make that knowledge useful for society. The biggest advantage of postgraduate study is being able to focus solely on your work and rectify your mistakes with no risk of being fired. Also, you have the great chance of meeting people from the rest of the world, in a very intellectually stimulating environment. was crucial for getting my job back in Mexico. I am now associate professor in the Centre for Research and Advanced Studies (CINVESTAV), a research institution of the federal government in Yucatán, Mexico. I am in charge of the Coastal Processes, a Physical Oceanography group, under development.
