We have a wide range of expertise in computer science and specialise in the following areas: Graphics and media technology: animation, visualisation, image recognition, rendering, application of computer graphics to film, computer music. Human-computer interaction: interaction modelling, mobile and ubiquitous computing, evaluating user interfaces, safety-critical systems, distributed interaction, collaborative systems, participatory design, cognitive information processing in interactive systems. Mathematical foundations: game semantics, category theory and logic, computer algebra, computational geometry, algorithms and complexity, cryptography. Intelligent systems: reactive planning, evolutionary computing, machine learning, agent technologies, modular and distributed intelligence. Research Degrees You can follow your research goals in the University, leading to a PhD. Alternatively your research could be based mainly in industry, leading to an Engineering Doctorate especially targeted at industrial leaders of the future. Either way, you will be supervised by our internationally-known staff. We warmly welcome applications from suitably qualified and highly motivated candidates interested in pursuing a research degree. MSc Advanced Computer Systems The MSc programmes in Advanced Computer Systems have been specially created to respond to developments in computer science and its allied professions. You will graduate fully prepared for a career in a fast-moving sector of computing technology. You can specialise in one of eight areas: Software Systems; Human Computer Interaction; Creativity & Collaborative Systems; Global Computing & Media Technology; Internet Systems; Mobile & Pervasive Computing; Security; Agent Technology. The MSc programmes: • are taught by recognised experts in each field, so that students benefit from excellent teaching by active researchers. • provide an advanced qualification which is both academically sound and industrially relevant. • bring together students from different themes in lectures and the laboratories, providing fertile ground for study and interaction. • are suitable for graduates from a range of disciplines, including computer science, engineering, maths and the physical sciences, psychology and communication studies.
