But Lenny Dykstra was not to be denied - he broke into the
major leagues at the age of 22 and played centerfield for the New
York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies for a total of 12 years. He
was a 3-time All-Star and a key member of the 1986 Mets World
Championship team and the 1993 Phillies World Series runnerup team. His admitted steroid abuse notwithstanding, there is no
denying that he was an OUTSTANDING baseball player who
played an important role in the success that his teams achieved.
The memoir tells a number of interesting baseball stories:
* As a kid, before a game in Anaheim Stadium, Lenny was
ribbing and insulting California Angels outfielder, Joe Rudi,
imploring him to toss him a baseball. After an incessant period
of badgering, Rudi strolled over and handed him a ball, saying,
"Here you go, son." "Made me feel about as big as a raisin."
* About Fred Lynn, a star outfielder with the Angels and
Red Sox, Lenny tells of the time he approached Lynn for
advice as to whether he should accept a full-ride scholarship
to Arizona State or go directly to professional baseball.
According to Dykstra, Lynn gave Lenny the once-over and
said, "This is a strong man's game, son," and walked away. Years
later, after Dykstra had reached the major leagues and Lynn
was at the tail end of his career, he looked up Lynn on the field
after batting practice and said, "Hey, Freddie man, looks like I
got a little stronger, didn't I?" "F... you" was all Freddie said.
* About his years with the Mets, 1985-1989, Dykstra
says that Manager Davey Johnson was greatly overrated as a
manager, was a very heavy drinker, and cost the Mets countless
games as a result of his ineptitude; Gary "Kid" Carter was a
focused, tough, clean-cut, "lead-by-example" player who didn't
really party with the guys, didn't cheat on his wife (unlike
Lenny), and came to play EVERY day; Keith Hernandez was
the most important player on the 1986 Mets Championship
team and was the best first baseman he ever played with or
against; Doc Gooden was the ace of the pitching staff and had
"one of a kind" talent; Kevin Mitchell was the best pure athlete
on the '86 team - never drank alcohol or took any drugs; at
one point during the '86 season, the manager announced
that Mitchell would be taking over in left field for the aging
George Foster, who then accused the Mets of racism - the
only problem with that was that both Mitchell and Foster are
black; and that the high point of Dykstra's career was being a
contributing member of the 1986 World Champion New York
Mets.
* About his years with the Phillies, 1989-1996, Dykstra
reports that Dutch Daulton was the team's quintessential
leader who handled the pitching staff extremely well; John
Kruk was "born to hit" and a lot smarter than his West
Virginia act would lead you to believe (which, by the way, was
