employment from Pierce, whom Israel
looks upon as little more than a greedy
poseur. Pierce, conversely, tells Israel
that he wants Israel to be a major part
of the firm, and proceeds to assign cases
to him.

The events that provide particular
tension to the film revolve around
ethical dilemmas of Israel's making, as
well as a volta, if you will, concerning
Israel's view of his life. Israel fails to
present a plea deal from the prosecutor
to a client, a co-defendant in a criminal
case. This almost costs Israel his job,
but he survives. After that client
is killed, Israel uses, anonymously,
information obtained confidentially
from that client to obtain a rather large
cash reward. This information concerns
the whereabouts of the deceased client's
co-defendant, who, only in the movies
as they say, subsequently becomes a
client of the firm. Israel then uses the
money to move from the hovel that
had been his flat for many years into
an expensive high-rise building with a
wonderful view of Los Angeles, and to
buy expensive suits.
Israel is seen throughout the film
carrying a worn trial bag that contains
a brief that Israel has been working
on for, perhaps, many years. The brief
concerns Israel's passionate belief in
the need to make the plea-bargaining
process fair. His Weltanschauung
changes from that of a lawyer devoted
exclusively, and to his economic and
social detriment, to the pursuit of what
is right and just, to one who views this
life as foolish, self-limiting, and selfdefeating. At the same time, George
Pierce is becoming more aware of the
non-business side to the practice of law,
so much so that he starts a pro bono
department in his firm, and asks Israel

to chair it. By the end of the film, Israel
presents an indictment of himself to
himself, and returns philosophically and
emotionally to his prior character and
persona. In this regard, the director, Dan
Gilroy, makes interesting, but curious, use
in the beginning of the film, and toward
its conclusion, of Israel's preparing and

typing that indictment. In the final
scenes of the film, the Pierce character is
seen filing in federal court what appears
to be a completed version of the brief
that Israel had been religiously carrying
with him throughout most of the film.
