r. Edgar Lloyd of Wyomissing died on Sunday, 19
November 2017, at the Highlands at Wyomissing. Edgar
was a native of Reading, PA and graduated from Reading
High School in 1945. He was the husband of Joan Erhard Lloyd
who survives him. They celebrated 67 years of marriage this past
year.
Dr. Lloyd enjoyed numerous sports, including golf, tennis and
especially handball and racquetball. Edgar introduced me to the
racquetball courts at the local YMCA and won all of our matches.
He continued to play well into his retirement. He loved the game
of Bridge and was a regular participant at the Reading Bridge Room,
attaining Gold Life Master status.
Dr. Lloyd was a graduate of Penn State University in 1949
after having served two years in the US Navy. He was a graduate of
Hahnemann Medical School in 1954 and practiced as a primary care
physician for three years in Reading before completing his Residency
in Anesthesiology at the University of Pennsylvania, becoming board
certified by the American Board Anesthesiology. He would return
to Berks County to practice for 30 years, initially at the St. Joseph
Hospital and then the Reading Hospital where he was appointed
Director of Anesthesiology, serving in that position for 13 years. He
would subsequently be appointed to the position of Vice President
and Medical Director at Reading Hospital, a position he would
hold until 1999. I knew Edgar in that role and always admired
his open-mindedness, fairness and wry sense of humor. He was
a long-time member of the AMA, PA Medical Society and Berks
County Medical Society as well as national and state Anesthesiology
Societies. He was a Fellow of the American College of Physician
Executives.
Dr. Ben Lloyd, Edgar and Joan's son, continues the family
tradition of practicing and teaching primary care medicine, as he
serves as the Internal Medicine Residency Program Director at the
Reading Hospital. Ben shared with me that Edgar valued "family"
very highly, as evidenced by 7 children, ten great-grandchildren, and
two great-great grandchildren.
We at the Berks County Medical Society extend our condolences
to Joan and the rest of Edgar's family. He will be sorely missed.
