The Rainmaker

t had not rained in weeks and the village's fields were too hard to plow. Dust and rocks
littered the hard soil and if it did not rain in the next few days, it would be too late to
plant the village crops.
Some of the villagers went to the Elder and complained, "We have less than a week and
there is not a cloud in the sky. Send for the Shaman so he can do a rain dance."
The Elder slowly replied, "The Shaman is in the neighboring village, which is at least a
four-day walk. He will not make it in time."
The villagers began to panic. How will they survive?
The Elder raised his hands and a quiet fell over the crowd. "You all know Shaman's
rain dance; we don't need him to perform it. It's simple: you just shuffle left, shuffle right,
stomp four times, and jump."
The villagers looked at each other but no one moved. Finally, a young apprentice
walked over to the barren field. He shuffled left, shuffled right, stomped four times, and
jumped. And repeated the steps several times.
Nothing happened.
The Elder yelled out, "Do you really think that the dance of one apprentice can match
the magic of the mighty shaman? You need more than one person dancing!"
Quietly, a woman from the village walked on to the field and joined the dance. They
shuffled left, shuffled right, stomped four times, and jumped. And repeated the steps
several times.
Nothing.
"More dancers!" the Elder yelled.
Soon the woman and the apprentice were joined by a few more villagers, who left the
large group of cross-armed villagers to join the dance. They shuffled left, shuffled right,
stomped four times, and jumped. And repeated the steps several times.
Nothing.
"This rain will not come unless we all do the dance," yelled the apprentice to the
crowd.
Soon the woman and apprentice started to drag family and friends onto the field.
Within a few minutes the entire community was dancing. The Elder could even see smiles
and hear laughter in the crowd. They shuffled left, shuffled right, stomped four times, and
jumped. And repeated the steps several times.
Yet still no rain.
