few hundredths of a point on his GPA. Both he and Dr. Marcus'
mother (whose father was a physician) placed a very high value on
education, illustrated by his mother having called the University of
Pennsylvania shortly after he was born to inquire how much to save
for his tuition!
His father never lost his desire for higher education, and
finally earned a bachelor's degree when he was 73 years old. The
importance of education as a path to a successful, meaningful life,
and the value of knowledge for the sake of knowledge, were lessons
that Dr. Marcus took to heart and that have become manifest in
the shape his life has taken in retirement. When not busy with his
philanthropic agenda, he enjoys attending CME events and has
maintained his medical license.
In addition to his position on the Board of the Foundation
for RACC, Dr. Marcus currently serves on the board of directors
for Our City Reading, First Priority Bank (Malvern, PA), and the
Vegetarian Resource Group (Baltimore, MD). He is an active
member of the Berks County Medical Society's Executive Council
(which functions as its board). On January 1, 2018, Dr. Marcus
will join the board of the Reading Public Museum, where he hopes
to endow a gallery in the coming year. Educating children has been
a central mission of the museum from the time of its founding
by Dr. Levi W. Mengel, who taught in the Reading public school
system.
The Reading Public Library is another institution that Dr.
Marcus sees as contributing in vital ways to the ability of the
children of Reading to succeed through education. It provides a
safe environment for children outside of school hours, with access
to educational resources.
Dr. Marcus also supports the Children's Beach House in Lewes,
Delaware. Founded by Lydia Chichester du Pont in the early
1930s, the Children's Beach House is a nonprofit whose mission
is to help children with special needs, particularly with regard to
hearing and speech challenges, achieve their highest potential as
members of their families and their communities.
Having no children of his own, Dr. Marcus has found it
especially rewarding to contribute to organizations whose work
benefits children and youth, especially those organizations with
education at the core of their mission. According to Dr. Marcus,
the organizations he has chosen to support also have in common
leaders who pursue their missions with passion and who are able to
make immediate and effective use of the resources available to them.
Getting to know and work alongside these generous and committed
people has been another rich reward of the path Dr. Marcus has
taken since his "so-called" retirement. The Berks County Medical
Society congratulates Dr. Marcus on his well-deserved recognition
at the Science of Success celebration and applauds all the good work
he is doing in our community and beyond.
