THE KEYS TO

Happiness

Thomas Jefferson once said,

"Honesty is the first chapter
in the book of wisdom."

I was reading about physician satisfaction recently and I found
that depending on the survey only 6-38% of physicians are
happy with their lives.
I started thinking about why that is and how we can honestly
look at ourselves and find that happiness. Despite all of the years
of hard work and cost physicians accumulate as students and
residents, we do make more money than most people in this
country, so why then are there so many unhappy doctors? Does
economic success equate to happiness?
Amber, my wife, threw that question at me: "Are you happy
with your life?" I gave it a serious thought and came to the
conclusion that despite all the negatives, I am very satisfied
and happy with my life despite my rants about the trials and
tribulations of being a physician, a tendency that my good
friend Dr. Richard Oyelewu often reminds me of. I started to
think, what makes me happy and satisfied and what can I and
others do to be happier and content with our lives?
1. Family life, my wife, children, and friends are a
big part of what keeps me going. I believe it needs work
and commitment. If your home life is stable, whatever
