Of special interest to history buffs are
tissue specimens from the chest of John
Wilkes Booth, slides of Albert Einstein's
brain, the conjoined liver and plaster torso
death cast of the famous "Siamese Twins,"
Chang and Eng. In addition to many
permanent collections, they also hold several
thematic exhibitions, including the history
of medicine through the Civil War with
related medical tools and instruments, and
the Dr. Benjamin Rush Medicinal Plant
Garden, displaying 50-60 medicinal plants
and herbs.

The William P. Didusch Center for
Urologic History, originally founded in
Washington, D.C., has gone through
several changes. It covers some 300 years
of urologic medical history from the oldest
procedures to modern lithotripsy. Some of
its older instruments often scare visitors.
The museum is now located in Linthicum,
MD, within the headquarters of the
American Urological Association.
The Army Medical Museum and
Library had its beginnings during the
Civil War and was officially housed in
1887 at the National Mall, Washington,
D.C., but in the 1960s its components
were moved to their present successor
locations. In 1968 its collection of
equipment, specimens and books was
dispersed among three successor agencies:

Medicine, in Forest Glen Annex of Fort
Detrick, Silver Spring, MD; the Armed
Forces Institute of Pathology; and the
National Library of Medicine, now at the
NIH campus, Bethesda, MD.
We close, for want of further time and
space, with a historically important facility
further away than all the previous ones
referenced. This is the Edward H. White
II Museum of Aerospace Medicine,
named after the first American astronaut
to "walk in space." It was initially located
in Hangar 9, at the old Brook Air Force
base, San Antonio, Texas. However,
that military base was closed, like so
many others, as part of the federal Base
Realignment and Closure Commission
actions in 2011, so the Hangar 9 facility
is now part of the Brook City-Base
mixed use community, where the Bexar
County, Texas, Historical Commission has
assumed sponsorship of its restoration to
create an aviation museum. The hangar
(now designated a national, state and
local landmark) will display an extensive
collection of photographs and equipment
related to aviation and aerospace
medicine.
Finally, the author wishes to
acknowledge the liberal use of information
available on the various websites of
the respective facilities described, with
a special note of thanks to the Mutter
Museum and its resource materials.
John P. Maher, MD, MPH, author, is
a retired public health physician, a
Vietnam Veteran, and a long-time
member of the CCMS Board of
Directors.
