The Most
Harmful Drug
in America

I

have been wanting to write about the harm inflicted by alcohol abuse
for a while. There is another drug which has rightly received a lot of
attention and opioid use has been declared a crisis. I am so glad that
we are trying to do something about this problem, but I must state that
the alcohol epidemic causes much more harm. Alcohol abuse affects
almost all of those who drink and those who are associated with them
and even those that are unfortunate enough to be in an alcoholic's path,
be that an assault or a motor vehicle mishap with an innocent bystander.

One term which we must all recognize is 'Alcohol Use Disorder'
defined as 'chronic relapsing brain disorder characterized by inability to
control or stop drinking alcohol'; more than 15 million Americans suffer
from it. Globally 2.5 million deaths occur annually from alcohol. But
let's talk about the harm caused by alcohol in the USA.
* A 2013 study showed alcohol causes 9 times as many deaths
as other drugs, and is the third leading cause of preventable
death in the USA. Nine percent of all deaths were attributed to
alcohol.
* 88,000 deaths occurred from alcohol consumption directly
including 4300 underage deaths.
* Alcohol contributes to illnesses such as liver cirrhosis,
hypertension, and pancreatitis. In 2015 alone 78,529 deaths
occurred from liver disease and almost half were related to
alcohol.
