* Alcohol use is associated with physical and sexual assaults,
unintended pregnancies, violence and various crimes.
There are 696,000 annual sexual assaults in colleges and
almost all involve alcohol. The most common cause of
high risk behavior is alcohol.
* 10% of families have a parent who is an alcoholic. 2 to 7 %
of child births suffer from fetal alcohol syndrome and low
birth weight. Child and spousal abuse and domestic violence
sprouts from this. The social and economic consequences
cannot even be fathomed.
* Alcohol can cause cancer of the mouth, esophagus, pharynx,
larynx, breast and liver.
* In 2005 there were 1.6 million hospitalizations related to
alcohol.
* Alcohol plays an important role in deaths of our youth [10

* Similarly in adults alcohol contributes to motor vehicle and
other accidents including fire and gun violence.
The economic consequences of alcohol are staggering. In 2006
the cost was thought to be 225 billion dollars; that number has
likely significantly escalated.
So as a cardiologist do I think there are any benefits of
alcohol? My answer is a very limited intake of alcohol may have
some benefits for heart and strokes although there are no large
randomized studies having shown a definite answer. I almost never
recommend alcohol for this purpose because to me there are too
many negatives; if someone's HDL is low I would tell them that a
glass of red wine would help raise it.
I think as physicians it's our duty to spread the word especially
to our youth about the dangers of the most harmful drug in the
USA, just as we are doing with opioids.
