Greatest Challenges Facing
the Physician's 2018
PATIENT SATISFACTION
AND ANGER:
I
think patient satisfaction is going to be the biggest challenge
that we are going to face and it will manifest in many different
ways, some legitimate, others created by a combination of the
digital world and EMR. Most of these physicians have no control
over but since we are the face of medicine we face the brunt of
their anger. I will give you an example of myself as a patient;
recently I had a routine procedure done and, in my mind, I have
one of the better insurances, but my out of pocket expense was so
large it felt like I did not have any insurance, and my annoyance
was more towards the physician because the bill came from him.
I can imagine how our elderly patients with limited resources and
past history of very low out of pocket expenses feel after getting
those bills. We will need to educate patients and push regulators to
reduce out of pocket cost to patients.

Google and other search engines give tremendous amount of
information but there is no control over what they put out there
and anyone can find what they are looking for and armed with that
possibly inaccurate information that appeals to their interpretation
they show up in our office and we as physicians will have to
educate them, and that can create conflict. Unfortunately they
are not reading the New England Journal of Medicine or American
Heart Journal because those are paid subscriptions; most of the
information they read is not up to standard and some is downright
rubbish, but somehow anything seen on the internet is accepted as
gospel.
I think patients will come with much higher expectations than
in the past, and we as physicians will have to deal with them more
carefully and at times in a very busy schedule explain complex
issues that they raise; because of limited digital data they have
gathered, they will also come with preconceived ideas of what
needs to be done for them and tests they need.
