Lessons learned from "Champion"
seasons, from on the court or in the
courtroom
"Never stop believing." "Much of success is born from
failure and the faith to stand back up after falling." "We found
success because we loved each other; love is a powerful force."
"Pay attention to the person next to you; make a difference in
another's life. We may play a different role from one another,
but our status is the same; we all need to feel appreciated."
"Humility and willingness to sacrifice for the greater good, this
is what it takes!" "Avoid distractions, achieve goals, focus on
the task at hand, commune with a higher power." "Life is about
serving others, not being served." And Father, what do you look
for in drafting your team? "We look for people who are over
themselves, those who fit into a system bigger than themselves."
Note: Villanova men's basketball coach Jay Wright will receive
the John R. Wooden Award's "Legends of Coaching" honor in
2018 which will mark the second consecutive year that a coach
with Delaware County ties has won the award. The "Legends
of Coaching" honor recognizes coaches who exemplify Coach
Wooden's high standard of coaching success and personal
integrity. Honorees are selected based on character, success on
the court, graduation rate of student-athletes in their basketball
program, coaching philosophy, and identification with the
goals of the John R. Wooden. Wright will be recognized during
the Wooden Award Weekend (April 5-7) as a part of the Los
Angeles Athletic Club's celebration of the greatest players and
coaches in college basketball. Wright is a five-time winner of
the Big East Conference Coach of the Year Award, and has led
Villanova to the NCAA Tournament in 12 of the last 13 seasons.
