way to provide a number of different
types of puzzles from word puzzles to
logic puzzles to math problems to spatial
challenges which require lateral leaps into
perspective shifts. This not only allows
everyone to highlight their talents but
actually rewards groups with a diverse set
of skills. But what is most fascinating about
playing these games, is observing your
own team. Because it's hectic, and because
you're on the clock, you learn a ton about
how your team works. You learn where
communication breaks down, what style
of communication works with different
members of the team, whether the people
on your team have a realistic view of what
they're good at. You see which people work
better in groups, which people work better
alone. You learn about everyone's different
mindsets-who's strong at logic or who can
make wild lateral leaps. If you go into this
escape the room experience with people
you work with or even just a group of
friends that spend time together, often times
what you learn inside one of these rooms
translates to how you interact outside the
room!
And what makes it even more remarkable
is that rather than getting hung up on what
most people would probably consider the
mainstay of the genre the puzzle solving-
by breaking the challenge down into three
component parts, these games are accessible
to everyone - creating a much broader
scope of play and allowing for interpersonal
interactions that move the game from being
simply about a bunch of people solving
puzzles together in a room, to a true team
effort to overcome one interwoven task! So,

LET THEM
EAT CAKE
D

elaware County cake artist Kristin Weldon Peri
(previously a member of the Delaware County
Bar Association) won the Most Artistic award at
the 2017 Let Them Eat Cake competition held March 5,
2017, at The Loews hotel in Philadelphia. The competition
featured specially designed cakes drawing from bakers
and cake artists across the Philadelphia metro area with
the theme "A Variety of Childhood Fun & Fantasy." The
competition is a benefit for Variety, a charity that enriches
the lives of children and young adults with intellectual
disabilities through social, educational, and vocational
programs that nurture independence and self-confidence,
and prepare them for life.
"Variety is a wonderful organization," said Weldon
Peri. "Knowing that the proceeds of this event benefit
Variety makes a win
even sweeter; and
the Let Them Eat Cake competition was
incredible. It was really such an honor to
compete."
Weldon Peri's cake featured a
storybook castle-in-the-sky, where a
3-foot castle cake was suspended above
a thin chocolate vine emerging from a
hand-painted fondant covered storybook
cake complemented with colorful
butterflies.
Previously operating under the
name Divine Cakes, Weldon Peri
rebranded to doing business under her
name after appearing on two Food
Network television competitions:
Cake Wars and Sweet Genius on Food
Network, and Foodies "Just Desserts"
on NBC 10. Kristin also appeared
in a national ad campaign for T- Mobile. Her cakes have been featured on and in
Fox 29 Good Day Live, Main Line Today Magazine, Amy Atlas, Pottery Barn
Kids, Style Me Pretty, Inspired by This, etc. She has also designed cakes for the
Philadelphia 76ers, corporate executives and individual customers.
Kristin is an optimist who tries to do something each day to make the world
a little better. She donates her time and talent to select non-profit organizations.
She loves art, reading the classics, lacrosse, jump rope, and finding four leaf
clovers.
Due to the incredible amount of time and attention Kristin devotes to her
work, she limits the number of orders she accepts at any given time. Her focus
is always on high quality, low quantity. Her goal is consistent: to create edible
works of art that look fabulous, and taste amazing.
