He Who Embodies the Ideals of Greatness...
The Honorable John P. Capuzzi, Sr.
HON. FRANCIS J. CATANIA MEMORIAL
MAGISTERIAL DISTRICT JUDGES' DINNER
Submitted by Michael P. Pierce, Esquire, President, Delaware County Bar Foundation,
President, 2011, Delaware County Bar Association
April, Concordville Inn - As President of the Delaware
County Bar Foundation, it is my great honor and pleasure to
present the Honorable Francis J. Catania Memorial Award.
Judge Catania was appointed to the Delaware County Bench
in 1963 and during his 27-year tenure, 14 of which were as the
President Judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Delaware
County, Judge Catania personified the ideal Jurist: fair minded,
dedicated, hardworking, firm and compassionate. His work
ethic was legendary and his dedication to his profession and the
bench unmatched. Judge Catania had a particular affinity for
the Minor Judiciary, as they were then known, what we now
know as the Magisterial District Justice. He always believed
that this is "where the rubber meets the road," the first level of
the administration of Justice and the groundwork for what was
often a citizen's first and sometimes only exposure to the legal
and judicial system. Judge Catania worked tirelessly to support
the local justice system and was dedicated to the training of these
individuals and those who worked in the system.
Named in his honor, the Honorable Francis J. Catania
Memorial Award is presented to an individual who embodies the

ideals of Judge Catania and has made significant contributions to
the administration of justice in Delaware County.
This year's honoree, to me and those who practice with and
before him, is certainly a role model for the criteria set forth for
the award. The Honorable John P. Capuzzi, Sr. was sworn in for
a ten-year term as a Judge of the Court of Common Pleas on
January 3, 2012. In his time on the Bench Judge Capuzzi has
continued the traits and dedication that were hallmarks of his
time as a Magisterial District Justice in Marple Township from
2006-2011; fairness, compassion, dedication and hard work.
Judge Capuzzi is unselfish with his time and his continuous
mentoring of younger lawyers who come before him. He makes
it clear that the Law is an Honorable profession and those who
practice law need to be prepared, prompt, professional, and
dedicated to their craft. Judge Capuzzi has spent countless hours
in educating Lawyers, Judges and Magisterial District Justices
about procedures, process and presentation. A graduate of La
Salle University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and an MBA,
Judge Capuzzi obtained his Juris Doctor from the Delaware Law
School of Widener University in 1988.
