The Young L aw y ers' Sec tion

A Festive & Productive Year!

I

f you are new to the practice of law or new to Delaware
County, the Young Lawyers' Section of the Delaware County
Bar Association ("YLS") is a great way to network and enjoy
the camaraderie of other young attorneys. Not only does the
YLS offer excellent networking opportunities, but also provides
members with opportunities to give back to the community. The
YLS hosts a variety of events throughout the year such as the
Judges' Cocktail Party in the spring, a "Texas Hold 'Em Tournament" twice a year, a Phillies' Games Tailgate in the summer
and a number of happy hours. Additionally, the Section members
participate in the Annual Bench Bar Conference each summer
by presenting a Continuing Legal Education seminar. The YLS
sponsors other great educational programs throughout the year.
In keeping with its goal of service to the community, the
Section sponsors an annual holiday party for underprivileged
children and a 5k Run/Walk each fall to benefit the Philadelphia
Ronald McDonald House. The YLS welcomes all DCBA members 40 years of age or younger. For more information about
joining YLS or any of its upcoming activities, please contact
Matthew Bilker, YLS President, 2018, Email: mbilker@eckellsparks.com

7th Annual Run for the
House ... YLS 5k Run
The YLS 5k Run for the House
inaugural run first took place in
2011, under the leadership of Kristen
Rushing, Esquire, then President of
the Young Lawyers Section. Kristen
wanted the Young Lawyers to have
an event that could involve not only
the young lawyers, but also the
entire bar association and the local
community. She chose the Ronald
McDonald House as the recipient
of the funds raised during the run
because that organization held a
special place in her family's heart,
as it does for many families in
our community

"The things you do for yourself are gone when you are gone,
but the things you do for others remain as your legacy."
-Kalu Ndukwe Kalu
"A motto of mine for a long time now has always been that
with ability comes responsibility. A responsibility to help when
able, a responsibility to give back when you can, a responsibility
to teach when called upon. The formation of the YLS annual 5k
was exactly that. Members of YLS have the ability, so we also
have the responsibility to give back to our community and to be
more socially aware" ... Michael H. Hill, YLS President Emeritus
The Ronald McDonald House supports families of seriously
ill children by creating a community of comfort and hope. The
Ronald McDonald House of Philadelphia was the first of its kind,
and now serves as the model for over 350 Houses in 42 countries. Ninety percent of their funding comes from individuals
and corporate donors, and the remaining ten percent is provided
by Ronald McDonald House Charities.
Each year since its formation, YLS has donated one hundred
percent of the proceeds from the runs to the Adopt A Room program at the Ronald McDonald house on Chestnut Street. To date,
the 6-year total exceeds $41,000. The Adopt A Room partnership
program allows individuals, companies, or organizations to be
the room sponsor of one of the 65 guest rooms at one of their two
locations. Funding will sponsor all the families who sleep in that
room throughout the year.
RUN YLS, RUN! ... The YLS once again hosted the Run for the
House in 2017 at Ridley Creek State Park where approximately
50 runners came out to participate. Thanks to sponsors, especially new Platinum sponsors, United Scrap, Delaware County
Bar Association, and Sweeney and Neary, L.L.P; we were able
to donate over $10,000 to the Ronald McDonald House. With
that donation we pushed our grand total to over $50,000 raised
for this charity. The YLS of the Delaware County Bar Association thanks all who have donated, those who have run, and those
who support us year in and year out ... without you, we could not
keep "running"!
