"We began diversifying and also grew our international business
during that time," said (Hitt) Smith.
Since then, the company has experienced significant growth,
earning numerous business honors and awards. (Hitt) Smith plays
a leading role not only in the company, but also the erosion control
industry.
She serves as chairwoman of the Erosion Control Technology
Council and is a member of the finance committee for the
International Erosion Control Association. She serves as the
industry's liaison to the National Transportation Product
Evaluation program, and in 2012 was awarded the prestigious
STEP Award from the Manufacturing Institute, which recognizes
women in manufacturing.
"I see my work within the industry to be a great opportunity,"
(Hitt) Smith said. "I've earned the respect of my colleagues through
hard work and dedication."
Possible Challenges as the
Company Moves Forward
The expansion currently underway in Upper Tulpehocken is
expected to be completed by this fall, putting that manufacturing
facility on par with the recently renovated plant in South Carolina.

The company has implemented lean manufacturing practices
and will work for the rest of this year to upgrade some of its
machinery in a move to continue improving facilities and
operational practices on a regular basis.
Because East Coast is dependent on straw and other natural
materials, (Hitt) Smith sometimes worries about the weather, and
particularly about climate change. However, she said, climate
change also could increase the need for the company's product.
"It works both ways, and we do have a strategic plan in place to
deal with it," she said.
The company has plans for other changes, as well, but (Hitt)
Smith declined to discuss them at this time.
"We have some exciting growth plans for down the road. I just
can't announce them yet," she said.
East Coast Erosion Control in just 16 years has progressed
from a start-up company founded to meet a particular need to an
industry leader. And, said (Hitt) Smith, it is still evolving.
"When we started, we were just learning, and now we are one
of the leaders of the industry," she said. "That's because we have
planned carefully and we take every challenge that comes along
and deal with it. We look forward to servicing our customers
around the world from our Berks County location."
