The Arts Mean Business

A

sking if it makes a difference to move a concert event
out of the city might feel like asking if a tree makes
a sound when it falls in the forest. However, the
Reading Symphony Orchestra quickly learned the answer after
moving two of their subscription concerts to a different venue
outside the city earlier this year. Move a concert? According to the
restaurants they talked to, expect an 85 percent decline in dinner
revenue (per concert!).

Grasping the economic impact of arts and culture can be
an imperfect science. By its nature, art is subjective, and all arts
advocates struggle with traditional units of measurements when it
comes to the arts. However, understanding our impact becomes
manageable thanks to the data collected through community
consortiums like Berks Arts Council and then translated by
Americans for the Arts, a national arts advocacy organization.

Americans for the Arts then produces Arts and Economic
Prosperity reports, which is now in its fifth edition.
According to the most recent data collected in 2016, Berks
County's 32 nonprofit arts and culture organizations yield $18.9M
annually in local arts and culture spending. Of that amount,
the arts and culture organizations directly spend $10.8M and
audiences spend another $8.1M outside of the actual cost of
tickets, such as dining, parking fees, travel, etc. Additionally, these
organizations annually generate $785,000 in local government
revenue and $1M in state government revenue.
While the American for the Arts report provides a nice
snapshot of the economic impact our local arts and culture
organizations provide annually, let's examine and dissect what
those numbers represent for our community.
