A Comprehensive Approach
to Address Berks County's
"Silver Tsunami"

an you imagine a place
where good paying
jobs are plentiful, but
available workers are in short
supply? Well, you may not
have to use your imagination
to contemplate this scenario. If
current projections hold, Berks
County circa 2025 will become
such a place. This looming crisis
may very well be the defining
challenge for our community in
the decade ahead. This is because
the gap between new potential
entrants to the workforce (ages 25-29) versus those expected to
retire (ages 65+) is expected to grow significantly between now
and 2025. The following chart was prepared by the Berks County
Workforce Development Board:

Some important takeaways here:
* From 2011-2025, the "potential retiree" population (ages 65+)
is projected to grow by 33% from approximately 60,000 to just
over 80,000, or from approximately 1 out of every 7 Berks County
residents to nearly 1 out of every 5!
* Over the same decade and a half, the population of "potential
entrants" into the labor force (ages 25-29) is projected to remain
essentially flat at just over 20,000.
* The Berks County WDB projects that in our top economic
sector of manufacturing, local manufacturing companies will need
to recruit and retain ~7,000 new entrants by 2025 just to replace
retiring baby boomers.
The manufacturing jobs referenced above include many skilled
jobs which require good math and computer skills, as well as
critical thinking and problem-solving abilities; some will require
