4  COMMERCE QUARTERLY   FALL 2017

letter from the president

W

hat an amazing summer we've experienced here in
Berks County. I can't believe it's fall, and before
long the leaves will change color and we'll be
preparing ourselves for the possibility of snow in the coming
months.

In this edition of Commerce Quarterly, you'll get to read
about the Reading Radsport Festival, a two-day event held here
in September. I was totally bummed to have been out of town,
but Greater Reading Chamber & Economic Development
Corp. (GRCEDC) was proud to be a supporting sponsor,
and I heard nothing but great things about it from all of my
colleagues! This success continues to make me feel honored
to be part of a great community with non-stop venues for
our citizens to enjoy, both as spectators and participants.
Speaking of what's happening in Greater Reading - be
sure to try out the soon opening Belly-Kitchen and Drinkery
at the GoggleWorks. Hats off to executive director, Levi
Landis, for his innovative thinking to bring this new venue
to his location. Things are happening in our downtown, so
come down for a great dining experience!
Kudos are in order for our very own Unique Pretzels and
the efforts of their team, led by Justin Spannuth, V.P/COO,
who rallied a number of companies from Eastern PA together
to provide food and a tractor trailer filled with supplies for
the victims of Hurricane Harvey. Partnering with United
Natural Foods, Inc., this great effort helped thousands of
folks in a time of great need.

Finally, you will want to read the article, "Employees
Needed - Develop Within." I can't think of a better title
for this timely and informative piece. One of the greatest
concerns of all employers today, in Berks County and across
the country, is the concern for qualified workers to fill the
workforce gap. The "grey tsunami" is real, and staring us
squarely in the face. Those who are proactive in this race for
the best and brightest talent will win. Whether you consider
the model that many are using regarding apprenticeships, or
educational programs, there are many opportunities available
to our local business community.

The Chamber is taking a proactive role; and our Training
and Business Development Department offers some of the
best opportunities available for your employees to "skill up."
In addition, through our Workforce Development efforts
and our Director, Ellen Albright, you'll be hearing a lot more
on the topic. Stay tuned. . .
