ne of the things that struck me during my first
five months traveling around Berks County is the
sheer number of building and supply companies
that are based here. According to U.S. standard industry
classification (SIC) codes, we have over 250 companies
categorized as building materials suppliers, distributors
and manufacturers, producing and distributing nearly
every type of product found in commercial, industrial,
residential and civil construction projects. You can find
producers and suppliers of architectural and ornamental
iron and metal fabricating pieces; roofing and building cladding fasteners and products; kitchen cabinets,
hardware and solid surface materials; flooring, doors
and windows; plumbing fixtures, fittings and trim, and
lighting fixtures and hardware; electric supply solutions;
refrigeration and HVAC solutions; sealants and paints;
gaskets and valves; safety walls and industrial pipes;
concrete surface and precast products; and more.

Questions:

Tony Daskus
President & Owner -
GoodFellas Granite, LLC

Has your company seen more activity in
commercial, residential, or infrastructure
regionally? And what are some of the supply
trends you're seeing in Berks and regionally?

There has been a steady increase in both commercial and residential,
but for my business it's been more residential. Ninety percent of
my business is in granite or quartz countertops. We were steady
all winter long and are booming right now.

Has there been a resurgence in the
homebuilding/renovation market recently?

Homebuilding is on the rise, but renovations have really taken off.
We work with both the high-end builder and homeowners directly,
so there is a steady stream of work.

Has skilled labor shortage affected your
company's success and/or growth in Berks?
If so, what are you doing to address this?

This has been the toughest part of growing my business. We are
a very detail, high quality fabrication shop, and whenever we've
tried to hire workers that have been with other shops, they claim
to have many years of experience, but fail to maintain the quality
workmanship that is demanded in my business. We've gotten a
lot of workers with bad habits picked up at other shops, so we now
hire hard working people that want to learn a trade and we teach
them our way of doing things.

Have you embraced new procedures or made
any local partnerships to maintain a high
level of sustainability/waste reduction?
Have you had much success with collaborative
project delivery methods/integrated project
delivery in this market as a supplier?
