Add the more than 1250 construction-related trades contractor businesses who call Berks home and you have nearly
fifteen percent of Berks County's businesses making a living
in the construction fields. This represents a staggering number of employees who depend on the building industry.

While new development has been slower in Berks versus
our neighbors north and south, our supply and construction
companies benefit from regional growth. We reached out to
Chamber members within these categories and received the
following responses that are reflective of the local building
sector. Some of the resounding themes of our members
aligned with national trends, such as: increase in commercial
side of the business, skilled labor shortage, focus on sustainability and environmental concerns, and advancement
in material technology and use. We invite you to join the
conversation in helping Berks County move our community
forward for a sustainable future. Let us know where you see
future growth in the building and construction industry
sectors, and how we may be able to maximize our collective
efforts to make an economic impact with each project.

Andy Wernick, President -
Industrial Plywood, Inc.
We have not seen much more activity than normal. That's a
little surprising, because the basic fundamentals for building and
remodeling are all in place: low interest rates, home values are rising
so that people can tap into their equity for home improvement
loans, practically full employment, and finally, a booming stock
market enabling people to recover all of their losses endured in
2009. The market is more competitive as people are vying for the
same "slice of pie."

Not to any great extent. We have some customers who are very
busy and some, who have been in business for more than 30 years,
have become quite slow.

It has affected our company in that it forces me to continue
employing sub-standard employees because we just can't find
adequate replacements.

Not really applicable here, as we do not generate much waste at
all. We are conscious of recycling, though, and make every effort
to follow through.

Not really applicable here, as well. We deliver our products with
our own fleet. We had spoken to another supplier about this idea
several years ago, but could not smooth out the many logistical
issues behind the scenes.
