hat does our community look
like? What are the needs in our
community? What is the health
status of our community? These
are some of the questions that can be
answered from analyzing community and
health data.

In Lancaster, our poverty rate rose
for the fourth straight year to
10.8 percent. In the City, that rate is
29.2 percent, higher than the rates
in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and
most of Pennsylvania's bigger cities
according to Census Bureau data.
50.7 percent of renters in our
community are spending 30 percent
or more of their income on housing.
The 2015-2016 average high school
graduation rate in the 16 school
districts in Lancaster County was
91.2 percent.
On average, residents in Lancaster
County spend 23.1 minutes commuting
to work.
Lancaster County ranks 10th out
of 67 counties in Pennsylvania in an
index of overall health outcomes.
By looking at data, we can improve the
health and well-being of the whole population. Through the analysis and synthesis
of information and data from a variety of
sources, hospitals and health care providers
design programs and services to improve the
health of residents by assessing the health
needs of our local community.
Today, a robust set of data is driving
decision making more than ever. The
health of people and communities is heavily
influenced by factors such as socioeconomic
status, education, social network support,
access to care, access to transportation, and
employment. Because of this, organizations
that are committed to improving the health
of populations should not overlook the social

and economic conditions impacting the
well-being of community members.
While it is important that everyone have
access to affordable, high-quality medical
care, this is not enough to ensure that a
person is able to lead a long and healthy
life. The social and economic context in
which people live and work generates a mix
of resources, opportunities, obstacles, and
threats which determine the level of health
that can be achieved.
As health care continues its shift from feefor-service payment models to models that
reward providers for delivering high-quality,
cost-effective care, providers need deeper
insights into the health of their community's
population.

The Prosperity Indicators project, a
collaboration between the Lancaster
Chamber, County of Lancaster, LNP
Media Group, Lancaster County Community Foundation, and the United Way of
Lancaster County, is aiming to bring that
data to the forefront for the community.
Started in 2011 to monitor how Lancaster
County is doing in realizing a vision to
build a prosperous community, the project
is designed to provide access to data on
the County's current state, identify the
areas that most deserve the community's
attention, and monitor the progress that
is being made in achieving our vision for
the community.
