SUMMER 2017
Tec Centro
Students are supported by career advisors and employment specialists who
guide and advise them before, during, and
after their studies at Tec Centro. A typical scenario involves a potential student
inquiring about training programs. Tec
Centro sets up a career advising session
with that person, and they discuss their
interests, background, and abilities with
the advisor. Together they select a course
that fits the student, and they plan for the
next steps. A test of adult basic education
(TABE) is given to determine if an English
class is needed. There are special English
as a second language classes if a student
needs to improve skills for acceptance into
a training program.
When the student has all in order, Tec
Centro begins with the preparation for the
skills training. The student is scheduled for a
start date and the pre-requisites are fulfilled.
All health care students need to complete a checklist before beginning classes.
They need to have background checks,
physicals, TB shots, and flu shots during
the flu season completed. They must
also have class materials and uniforms
purchased. The health care students then
progress to the pre-courses, which Tec
Centro requires in addition to the core
classes. Introduction to Health Care and
Medical Terminology are taken immediately prior to the core classes and are also
taught by a HACC instructor. Having
these extra classes helps students (especially
those for whom English is their second
language) succeed in their area of study.
After completing the skills training, a
student receives a certificate from HACC
and Tec Centro and moves on to complete state testing to become certified.
Employment specialists work with the
student to secure employment with the
many employer connections that Tec
Centro has in the community. The center
is always seeking new connections to add
to this list. The demand is high for skilled
A success story from an alumnus of Tec Centro:
"I would like to tell my story and why I appreciate all Tec Centro
did for me. I am a single mother of two and I thought I was going to
be stuck at a retail job for the rest of my career. I had made a
decision to leave my job and go back to school. I was not sure when or
what school I was going attend, I just knew I was ready for a change.
I saw Tec Centro had different programs but nothing was available
that interested me, which was in the medical field as a receptionist
when I applied in January. I left my job in April with no plan and just
a hope and a prayer. I then got a call from Tec Centro in May and
they asked me if I was interested in a Medical Program that was just
starting. I was excited and I felt like I finally found what I wanted.
I told myself for my kids and myself I was going to work hard and
give it my all since this opportunity only comes once in a life time. As I
was attending the program I had a lot of ups and down in my personal
life as do many. I was not sure who would stay with my kids daily due
to summer time and no child care. I was not working so the bills were
going up and not much income coming in. So every day was hard but I
did not quit. I told myself it will get better I just needed to focus and
keep my head up and there would be better days.
In high school I was not good at tests and studying was hard too,
and with two kids it was even harder. I tried my best to keep all A's in
my class and a perfect attendance. I pushed myself a lot and with
the support from the Tec Centro Staff and the teachers at HACC,
I knew I was in good hands no matter how hard things got. The fact
that the staff asked how things are going and looking into how I was
doing and cared if I succeeded was what I appreciate the most. The
staff made sure we did not miss any days and if we did they made
sure they checked on us and if we needed anything they was always
there to help.
I then landed an internship at Southeast Lancaster Health Services through the HACC program. In my internship I was able to put
my skills that I was taught to use. I stayed on top of my intern hours
asked a lot of questions and stayed interested in what I was going
in for. I didn't want to let my professors or Tec Centro down. I wanted
them to see they did not waste their time with me and I also wanted
to prove to myself that leaving and taking this leap was all worth the
risk. My work spoke for itself as I was told to apply for an open position
and at my interview I was wanted for two other positions. I was blessed
to get a job just one week out of being done with schooling and it was
all thanks to the program. The time that was invested and the staff
made it easy and worth it. I just wanted to let Tec Centro know I
appreciate all they did and the time that was given and dedicated
to my success."
