President's Message

T

he first Pennsylvania Medical Society County Leadership Summit was
held at the PAMED office in Harrisburg earlier this summer. County
medical society presidents and county executive directors from across the
state came together with PAMED leadership to discuss the challenges and
opportunities that face Pennsylvania county associations and member physicians and
their practices. It was refreshing to hear that most county medical societies face similar
issues as Lancaster City & County Medical Society (LCCMS).

Topics included current health care-related legislation, society membership
recruitment and retention, and the effects of hospital system mergers on both
county societies and area physicians. We also discussed employed physician
concerns, physician burnout, pay for performance, Medicare access and Chip
Reauthorization Act (MACRA), and PAMED's new Practice Options Initiative,
the Care Centered Collaborative.
Certainly, there was no paucity of issues. A great deal of time was devoted to ideas
for improving communication between PAMED and the county societies-and
the members. The PAMED leadership team has a genuine interest in hearing from
us! Working groups were formed and creative approaches to addressing the issues
at hand were presented. The robust discussions and networking activities with the
other county society leaders were helpful and productive. The thoughts and solutions
heard will be brought to our local LCCMS board for further discussion and potential
implementation.
Beth Gerber, our executive director, and I came away with a renewed sense of optimism and a better understanding of PAMED's role in supporting organized medicine
in the Commonwealth. We are fortunate to belong to a county society with a rich
history of representing and advocating for all Lancaster County physicians, regardless
of their employment status or health system affiliation.
