Montgomery County Physician
Sworn in as 167th President of
The Pennsylvania Medical Society
BY TOYCA WILLIAMS, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, MCMS

C

harles Cutler, MD,
MACP, a board-certified
internal medicine specialist
in Norristown, was sworn in
as the 167th president of the
Pennsylvania Medical Society
(PAMED) in Hershey during
the PAMED Annual Business
Meeting in October.
More than 400 guests and
dignitaries attended
the inaugural
ceremony of a
physician who is affectionately called Chuck
by his peers and known to be a strong advocate
for the profession, as well as his patients. When
others learned he was running for election, the
common response was "It's about time."
One board member said his mentorship
more than 20 years ago planted seeds of how a
physician should treat a patient and his example
keeps him involved in organized medicine
today.
"He not only provided me with a great
example of how to treat patients with warmth
and compassion, he is also the reason I have
been an active member of the medical society
for the past 15 years," said Dr. Frederic Becker,
an internist in King of Prussia who worked
with Dr. Cutler for six years after completing
his residency. Along with Dr. Cutler, Dr. Becker
serves on the Montgomery County Medical
Society (MCMS) Board of Directors.
A 37-year member of MCMS and PAMED, he has
served on the MCMS Board since 1992, served as its
president from 1996 to 1997 and served on the PAMED
Board of Trustees from 2004 to 2009. Throughout his many
years of membership, he has served in numerous leadership
positions, committees, commissions, and task forces.
Additionally, he is a member of the American College of
Physicians (ACP) and the American Medical Association
(AMA).
The Philadelphia native, who has lived in Montgomery
County since 1978, said he couldn't imagine practicing
without the advocacy of the county and state medical societies.

"It would be
a world with no
one standing up
for patients when
business practices
of insurance
companies
interfere with
patient care," Dr.
Cutler said. "It would be a world with no one advocating for a
level playing field in the med-mal courtrooms.
Or a world with no one fighting to fund
medical education for the next generation of
doctors. Losing those advocacy efforts is nearly
unimaginable."
Dr. Cutler was chairman of ACP's Board of
Regents 2013-14 and was chairman of ACP's
Board of Governors 2010-11. He previously
served as governor of ACP's Southeastern
Pennsylvania Chapter and as a member of ACP's
Health and Public Policy Committee. In light of
his contributions to the College, he was awarded a
Mastership (MACP) in April 2014.
"Chuck is a quiet man of strong intellect and
the epitome of the ideal internist," said Martin
Trichtinger, MD, an Abington internist and
member of the MCMS Board of Directors. "He
gathers his facts, draws his conclusions and sticks
to his principle like a bulldog. I never like being on
the other side of an argument with him because
I know that there is a high likelihood that my
position is wrong."
Dr. Cutler is a member of Einstein Physicians
Norriton, a multi-specialty group practice part of the Einstein
Healthcare Network.
Dr. Cutler was chair of the Coalition for a Tobacco-Free
Montgomery County from 2003-2006. He served as president
of Victim Services Center of Montgomery County for two
terms from 2002-2004 and served as a member of its Board of
Directors for 10 years. After earning his undergraduate degree
from LaSalle College maxima cum laude in 1970 and his medical
degree from Temple University School of Medicine in 1974, Dr.
Cutler completed his internship and residency training at Temple
University Hospital in 1977.
He and his wife, Beverly, live in Merion Station, Pa. They
have three married daughters and four grandchildren.
