EVER WONDER HOW YOUR DOCTORS STAY CURRENT ON THE LATEST MEDICAL
DEVELOPMENTS? Through a process called CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION (CME),
doctors continue to learn long after they've completed formal training in medical school and residency. Not only is
CME a great idea to make sure doctors know the newest medical breakthroughs-it's required. Pennsylvania licensing
requirements dictate all physicians must complete CME hours to keep their license in good standing.
Here is what some local doctors have been doing, and a list of upcoming conferences our members plan to attend:

Dr. Rainey is an Occupational Medicine Specialist practicing in Dunmore.
He was interviewed by Christian Rainey, a fiirst year student at the Geisinger
Commonwealth School of Medicine.

Dr. Barna is an Opthalmologist with a sub-specialty in Opthalmic
Plastic Reconstructive Surgery. He practices in Hazle Township. He was
interviewed by Laura Barna, a second year medical student at the Geisinger
Commonwealth School of Medicine.

WHAT DID YOU LEARN THAT YOU'LL PUT INTO YOUR PRACTICE?

Dr. Almeky practices Family Medicine in Kingston. He was interviewed
by Somiah Almeky, a fiirst year student at the Geisinger Commonwealth
School of Medicine.

Dr. Kapp is a Urologist practicing in Scranton. He was interviewed by
Amelia Mackarey.

Past Violence is the single best predictor of future violence, and men are
ten times more likely to commit violent acts than women. Commission of
violent acts peaks in the late teens and early twenties. Assessment tools can
help evaluate the risk for violence. This is important in my practice since I
have to determine clearance of security workers who carry weapons at a
nuclear plant. I have to make sure the workers are trustworthy and reliable.

I learned about a promising new topical treatment for wet age-related
macular degeneration and ways to clinically differentiate malignant from
benign eye tumors. There are new innovations with micro-invasive surgery
techniques for certain types of glaucoma. I was able to review and use
various new technologies prior to purchase for my practice.

This is the biggest meeting of family physicians in the country. The
most helpful things I learned were the latest recommendations for the
treatment of Diabetes Mellitis and Osteoporosis. Diabetes is becoming
more prevalent and I think it is very important to stay up to date on the
newest prevention and treatment options available, so I can offer our
community the best possible care.

The conference discussed the latest guidelines for the treatment of
kidney stone management, bladder cancer management, and prostate
cancer management. An expert panel on bladder cancer went over several
research papers with the audience to offer an in-depth explanation of how
new treatment guidelines were determined, and another panel debated
the pros and cons of various procedures and discussed various patient
scenarios in order to educate physicians on how to utilize new techniques.
