Seasonal allergic
S

easonal allergic rhinoconjunctivitis,
also called hay fever or rose fever,
is one of the most common medical complaints in the US. According to
the American College of Allergy, Asthma
and Immunology, as many as 50 million
Americans suffer from some kind of allergy.
Allergic reactions occur when antibodies
called IgE found on
mast cells are exposed
to allergens, releasing histamine and
other mediators.
Allergic rhinitis affects
individuals at any age,
although it is most common
among younger people. Those affected
may notice a stuffy nose and/or runny nose,
a drip in the throat, an itch in their ears,
nose and/or throat. They may feel that they
have a cold that comes around every year
around the same time. Allergic conjunctivitis
(involving the eyes) is commonly associated
with allergic rhinitis. The only difference
between seasonal and perennial rhinitis is
the allergen. Symptoms, response to therapy,
and pathophysiology are the same.
Sometimes it is hard to tell whether
someone suffers from allergic rhinitis, a cold, a sinus infection, or other
problems. One of the best ways to find
out is to be tested by a board certified
specialist in allergy, asthma and immunology. This physician may do skin testing,
or blood testing, to determine whether
someone has allergies. Skin testing has
the advantage of giving immediate results,
which are relevant to the patient. Seeing the
arm swell and itch from an allergen is more
likely to cause an individual to change his
or her behavior, rather than being told the
results of the blood test. In addition, skin
testing is more sensitive than blood testing.
Blood testing may include RAST (radioallergosorbent testing) and similar tests.
