Protect yourself from Lyme
disease this tick season

efore going outside to hike, garden or play with your
kids, you already know the importance of breaking out
the sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. But you
might not be quite as vigilant when it comes to defending yourself
against another outdoor threat of the warm-weather season: ticks.

Some people develop a skin rash around the site of the tick
bite, which can appear as an ordinary red area or as a bullseye
shape with a darker edge. Although a bullseye-shaped skin rash,
known as an Erythema Migrans, is one of the early signs of a Lyme
disease infection, only half of people diagnosed with Lyme disease
experience a rash at all - and sometimes it doesn't look like a
bullseye. If you do develop a bullseye-shaped rash, it's crucial to
seek medical treatment right away.

Safeguarding yourself against ticks goes beyond the 'ick' factor
of having a bug crawl across your skin or bite you. Ticks can carry
serious diseases, including Lyme disease.

Other early symptoms of Lyme disease include:
* Flu-like illness
* Joint pain and swelling
* Neck, back and jaw pain
* Headache
* Bell's palsy, or facial nerve paralysis
* Extreme fatigue

Signs and symptoms of Lyme disease
Lyme disease can be transmitted through the bite of an infected
tick. Once attached, a tick can pass bacteria that causes Lyme
disease into your bloodstream where it will begin to spread
throughout your body. Ticks can stay attached for up to several
days while they feed. The longer the tick stays attached, the
greater the risk of contracting Lyme disease.
