to effect change. Medical societies are already "organized," and
have lobbies to influence legislation. The AMA is one of the
"richest" lobbies in the US, and has become responsive to younger
members and women physicians. While we may perceive that
organized medicine is an "old boy's network," we need to join
the network so that we can change it!
Several woman medical students relayed concerns about how to
deal with sexist comments and harassment. They are disappointed
that their male counterparts do not speak up when there are
sexist or demeaning comments made to the women on clinical
rotations. The men joined the discussion and were honest in
their concern that, as students, they feared recrimination if they
spoke out. They were interested in being sensitive to the issue
and if unaware that a particular comment was condescending,
being enlightened! I was surprised that the students still felt that
Attendings treated them poorly and did not show them respect.
It seems that Jeff, my alma mater, has not progressed much in
its treatment of students!
Having had many opportunities to address medical students,
I am very impressed with the attempts of most of them to
fight sexism and bias. I do believe that their attitude will have
a positive effect on changing the culture. If we continue to
oppose gender, ethnic, and racial bias, this attitude will infuse
the pervading culture.
My final message is that "There is strength in numbers" and
we must fight discrimination together. If we want parity, we
must ask for it! I am also actively matching students with female
mentors in their specialty of choice. I am looking for female
mentors and encourage those interested to email me at sherry.
