has that first instrument on which he practiced. At
that dinner by the bay, the young physician was
enamored with the artists at the table, and became
one of their patrons. "I caught the bug. Once it
bites, you cannot stop."
So, there he was, laying out two parallel tracks
for his life - art and medicine. After the Navy, he
had a dizzying few years in medicine - a Jefferson
residency in radiology that branched into radiation
oncology; a radiation oncology training program at
Penn; short stints at Hahnemann, then Columbia
and Harvard, before returning to Hahnemann,
where he felt the hospital was ahead of the curve
in the field of radiation oncology.
"We had the first linear accelerator in Philadelphia," Dr. Brady recalled. "The Varian 6-Millimeter
Volt Accelerator. It was an incredible machine. It
lasted 25 years. We did some things with that
machine decades ago that are only commonly
done now."
Still, compared to today, Dr. Brady describes
those first heady days as a primitive period in the
techniques he was helping to develop to battle
malignant tumors. "A lot of it was hand-driven.
treatment plans made with ISO curves and summating the dose distributions. Time-consuming,
mentally consuming, frustrating. Now it's all done
by computer."
In 1970, he became chairman of the Department
of Radiation Oncology and Nuclear Medicine at
Hahnemann. By then he was on his way to writing,
co-writing or editing an astounding 800 articles,
and about 100 book chapters and books. The book
that has helped make him a legend in the field is
the one he worked on with Dr. Carlos A. Perez -
Principles and Practice of Radiation Oncology. The
landmark publication - the radiation oncology
bible, running some 2,600 pages -- will soon be
in its seventh edition.
It almost didn't get written. "There were some
at Lippincott who said we shouldn't do the book.
They said Perez is unknown and Brady's a Philadelphia socialite. We had to go over some heads
to win approval."
That "Philadelphia socialite" comment got under
Dr. Brady's skin. He couldn't fathom how someone
looking at his record in radiation oncology, could
