Making the PDMP Easy to Access and Simple to Understand
Confronting the challenges of discovery
If PDMP reports are going to be used consistently and therefore
help to proactively identify patients with problems, several things
need to change. These are the things that the PastRx PDMP tool
is doing today.
If we agree the PDMP can be a valuable tool to clearly identify
patient substance use concerns, your work and unfortunately, your
challenges are not over. Confronting the patient is not easy nor is
it easy to find/recommend available rehab treatment or support
services. The CDC recently launched a campaign to help states
fight the prescription opioid epidemic. The campaign, featuring
real-life accounts of people recovering from opioid use disorder, aims
to increase awareness and knowledge of the risks of prescription
opioids, and help people stop inappropriate use.
1. Eliminate manual data entry
o Information for all scheduled patients is
automatically pulled from the EHR or scheduling
system
o The state PDMP system is then queried the night
before the patient is scheduled and reports are
automatically available each morning for review
o Non-scheduled patients or refill requests are managed
via a simple pick list query
2. The PDMP is an extension of the EHR
o Depending on the EHR, PDMP review is integrated
within your normal EHR patient chart review

Summary
For now, we encourage you to use the PDMP program consistently
and pervasively. It presents valuable information about the patient's
history not available via your EHR. Getting a PDMP report on
every patient will uncover clinical and behavioral issues previously
unknown and therefore undiagnosed and untreated. It is a valuable
tool in the fight to address substance use disorder.
If we can make accessing PDMP reports faster and easier and
then presenting the data in a more meaningful manner, we hope
viewing PDMP reports becomes as endemic a process as taking
the patient's weight, blood pressure or heart rate. *
o This eliminates the need to toggle between the state's
PDMP web browser and your EHR
o PDMP reports can be embedded inside the EHR for
documentation and compliance management
3. PDMP data is augmented, organized and displayed into
meaningful context
o MME totals are calculated automatically
o Areas of concern are automatically highlighted via
Alerts (e.g. elevated MME, multiple prescribers of
the same class of drug; multiple geographically
inconvenient pharmacies or prescribers, paying cash vs.
using insurance, etc.)
o Alert thresholds are configurable reducing alert
fatigue
o Data is displayed in a user-friendly, graphical and
intuitive manner making it easier to identify medical
and behavioral problems
