SUMMER IN THE CITY

HEALTHCARE LAW
Preventing Heat-related Illness
and Death
Health care providers are uniquely positioned to advise at-risk
patients and their caregivers about how to prevent heat-related
illness. PDPH recommends the following guidance throughout
the summer season:
* Advise at-risk patients to use their air conditioners on
hot days. Air conditioners should be set to 78°F to provide
comfort while conserving energy. Electric fans do not provide
sufficient cooling during extremely hot weather. If the patient
does not have air conditioning, he/she should be encouraged
to visit an air-conditioned space, such as a library, senior
center, or friend's home.
* Advise patients to increase fluid intake during hot weather
regardless of activity level. Alcohol, caffeine, and sugary drinks
should be discouraged as they may contribute to dehydration.
If the patient's fluid intake is restricted, he/she should be
advised about how to maintain appropriate hydration levels.
* Encourage caregivers to help at-risk patients stay cool and
hydrated. Remind both patients and caregivers to watch for
the signs of heat-related illness or exacerbation of chronic
medical conditions.
* Promote awareness of City services during a Heat Health
Emergency, including cooling centers (specific locations and
hours are announced when the emergency is declared) and
the PCA Heatline. Anyone struggling with the heat can
call the Heatline at 215-765-9040 to get heat safety tips or
to speak to a Health Department nurse about heat-related
medical issues.
