y term as PCMS president passed quickly. It is now time to
pass on the gavel. It has been a privilege to serve and help our
Society grow. This magazine is also here to serve you as our
members. We have tried to give you insight into issues that are important to you, our
profession and the city where many of us live and work.
This issue's article on syphilis is a good example of that service. Our cover story
examines the syphilis outbreak in Philadelphia, and what's being done to try to
prevent its spread. At around the turn of our current century, syphilis looked like a
disease that was going to follow smallpox in disappearing from the face of the earth,
but now it's rebounded. It has been described as an epidemic in some parts of the
country, including Philadelphia, which has nearly three times the percentage of
cases than the next highest county in Pennsylvania.

Our editor, Alan Miceli, interviewed Timothy Amorim, a disease intervention
specialist for the Philadelphia Department of Public Health. Amorim explains just
how hard it is to find people with syphilis, and then find their sex partners. His
21st Century detective work includes examining dating apps. You might be quite
surprised by the theories experts have for the resurgence of this disease.
The news has kept us well informed of the troubles surrounding the care of
veterans at VA hospitals around the country. In an effort to improve delivery
of care, VA officials have turned to telemedicine. Our executive director, Mark
Austerberry, reports how the VA has embraced telehealth as a way to offer more
timely treatment to veterans.
Starting this summer, the VA will allow its doctors, nurses and other health
care providers to communicate with their patients through telehealth, or virtual
technology. The telehealth system will be able to reach vets anywhere in the
United States.
