2017 House of Delegates Recap

T
he House of Delegates consists of more than 320 members
elected by county medical societies, specialty societies and
PAMED sections such as the Early Career, Medical Student,
the Resident and Fellows Sections.
The business of the House of Delegates consists primarily of
resolutions and recommendations submitted by delegations or by
individual delegates. Each item of business is assigned to a reference
committee, consisting of several members of the House. Each reference
committee conducts a hearing to receive testimony for or against
proposed resolutions from other PAMED members and delegates.
The committee then formulates recommendations for action by the
full House, which votes to adopt, reject, amend or refer (for further
study or for decision by the Board of Trustees) each recommendation.
The House of Delegates exemplifies PAMED's democratic governance.
Any PAMED member may present testimony (i.e., speak for or
against a resolution or recommendation) at reference committee
hearings and may attend the meetings of the full House of Delegates
as an observer. During the two-day meeting held each year, it
deliberates and acts on issues related to health policy, managed care,
public health, programming, and society administration.
The annual meeting was held Oct. 14-15, 2017. The Philadelphia
County Medical Society (PCMS) delegation consisted of 38 voting
delegates, three alternate delegates. Serving on the PCMS delegation
carries with it the responsibility of representing the physicians of
Philadelphia County, but it also provides an opportunity to influence
the policies of organized medicine.
