West Reading Avenues Summer 2017 - 20
IN THE COMMUNITY
By Alicia Lee, resident of West Reading
eep America Beautiful is a non-profit organization established to educate people to take action in their communities to improve and beautify them. Ending littering,
improving recycling, and beautifying America's communities are
three objectives they wish to accomplish. The country's largest
community improvement program is called the Great American
Cleanup. More than 20,000 communities each Spring engage in
this program. Most important is the 5 million volunteers. For more
information on how to clean your block please visit KAB.org.
My boyfriend Derek Rutter and I participated in West Reading's
Earth Day Clean-Up & Beautification Event on Saturday, April
22nd. The event was hosted by the West Reading borough &
Recreation department. There were several areas the team of
volunteers focused on, which included the community garden,
clover leafs, pavilion/park, streets in West Reading, fishing dock,
and Wyomissing Creek.
Avenues Winter 2016
About 45 volunteers of all ages showed up around 9am and met
at 2nd and Chestnut streets in West Reading. We were warmly
greeted by Dean Rohrbach, Elm Street Manager, Ruby, Dean's
dog and Karla Rosenbusch, resident of West Reading. We enjoyed
some delicious coffee and fresh made donuts provided by The
Wyomissing Restaurant and Bakery.
Shortly after, we donned our provided work gloves and were tasked
with our job assignment for the day. Cara Giagnocavo, the West
Reading Community Garden Manager, led the group of volunteers
to clean out the beds, cut the grass, pull weeds, and fill beds with soil.
Cara is also a board member of the West Reading Environmental
Advisory Committee & the Neighborhood Advisory Committee.
This parcel of land was previously a vacant lot and has been transformed into a beautiful garden. It is one of the many features the
West Reading borough has to offer.
