West Reading Avenues Fall 2017 - 25

For the bike-share program, Reading Health is partnering with
Zagster, a Massachusetts-based transportation provider that offers
turnkey bike-sharing systems in the United States. Employees
can download the Zagster app on their smartphone and register
to borrow or rent a bike.
When employees borrow or rent a bike, they receive a special
code through the Zagster app that they can use to unlock the bike.
Employees can use the bikes at their convenience, because the two
bike racks are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year.
Reading Health encourages employees to use the bikes to
attend meetings, go to lunch, run errands, or simply take a ride
to get some exercise.
"At Reading Health, we don't just talk about health and wellness,
we walk the walk," said Desha Dickson, Reading Health's Director
of Community Health and Engagement, and one of the people
instrumental in bringing the bike-share program to the health
system. "We don't just tell employees it's important to be healthy;
we provide avenues that help them achieve good health. And
our patients and the community benefit from their good health."
Reading Health recognizes that it is challenging for employees
to fit exercise into their busy schedules, so it offers initiatives such
as the bike-share program on health system grounds.

"It is important that employees are well and engaged in physical
activity, and we can help them achieve their best health by providing opportunities like the bike-share program," Dickson said.
Reading Health spent about two years researching how best to
implement the bike-share program on its campus, considering
what would work best for the health system, for the staff and,
eventually, for the community.
The health system has just started talking with businesses
in the community to consider ways that local businesses could
create similar bike-share programs - for their employees and
also in collaboration with Reading Health to encourage health
system employees to bike to their establishments and patronize
their businesses.

bike-share program," Dickson said. "We are
committed to innovative, outside-the-box programs, and this is an example of that. We are
recognized for providing excellent, compassionate care to our patients, and we apply that
same level of focus to ensuring our employees
are in good health as well."
