Finding the Right
Health Insurance
for Your
Employees

he best advice that Jay Mahoney,
CBC, can give employers who
are looking for a quality healthcare plan for their employees is to find
an agent who will look out for the
interests of both your company and the
people who work for you.
While employers with 50 or more
employees - those who are required
to provide healthcare - can purchase
insurance online without the benefit
of an agent, they are less likely to find
the support they need when a problem
arises.

"Employers can do whatever they want, but if you have
a problem, who are you going
to talk to?" asked Mahoney, a
benefits manager at Gallen
Insurance in Shillington. "A
good agent will fight for
your employees. If my client
has a problem, I tell them to
come to me and I'll take care
of it."
According to the 2012 U.S. Census, 28 million small businesses in the
United States are required to provide
employee health insurance because
they employ 50 or more people.

is the largest source of coverage for
Americans. Many small businesses
with fewer than 50 employees also offer
health plans as incentive for hiring and
retaining good workers.
"People look for two things when
they're job hunting," Mahoney explained. "They look at how much
they'll be paid, and what benefits they'll
get."
Employers with fewer than 25 employees may be eligible for an employer
tax credit if they provide health benefits
for their employees. And, while some
employers with just a few employees
offer benefits, others will help their
workers to pay for the cost of individual insurance.

However, warned Mahoney, with
costs of the Affordable Care Act rising
dramatically in some regions and its future in question, as well, many employers who had helped employees to cover
some of the cost of individual plans are
coming back to the group market.
"You generally only need two or
more employees to be included on a
group plan," Mahoney said. "Small
businesses are coming back to the
group market because they are more
stable and more flexible than the individual plans that are available."
Employers who choose a lower-cost
plan that comes with high deductibles
could help employees offset the costs of
those deductibles by setting up a health
reimbursement arrangement (HRA) if
they wanted to, Mahoney explained.
