FROM THE PRESIDENT

H

ere we are half way through the summer already. The
one thing I'm sure of is that this summer has not been
dry. It's not many years, during this time of year, that
the lawn needs to be mowed twice a week.

I would like to address a subject that is a growing concern
in the construction industry. That would be the lack of the
younger generations getting involved in the trades. In my opinion, there are a few outstanding problems. One is they can't do
basic math (addition, subtraction and multiplication) in their
heads. They need to write it down or even worse go to their
phone to get the answer. Ask why and they tell me they haven't
used it since grade school or always had a calculator to do it for
them. What a shame. Additionally, is they can't read measurements on a tape measure. I've found most have no idea what an
eighth or sixteenth is. To them it is one of those little marks.
Another problem is young people don't want to take
the time to work with and learn from a craftsman that has
probably been doing it for ten or more years. Unfortunately,
this means starting at the bottom and getting dirty; but it also
means picking up what the craftsman has learned over the
years and tricks of the trade. I know this because it is exactly
what I had to do, you don't start at the top, you work to get
there. With a little common sense, concentration and sweat
a person can make a decent living in the trades. The last, and

most distracting, is the phone they always have in their pocket.
They can't do without texting or Facebooking for a few hours
so they can concentrate on what they're doing.
I happen to know some of the young work force, that work
for me and my sub-contractors, think I have been around since
the Ice Age. Granted, I've been around a long time, however, it
hasn't been quite that long. However, I can still do math in my
head, read a tape and know when to use the phone and when
to ignore it.
This year's Restoring Hope Project has been determined
and will take place the week of September 9th through the
15th. Each project seems to uncover conditions and difficulties
that need to be overcome. I'm sure this project will be no different. The board is currently putting together a list of materials needed for the project. I would like to thank the numerous
companies that have already committed to material donations
and am encouraging other companies to offer to donate material. Skilled labor (carpenters, electricians and plumbers) will
also be needed. Owners, it would be greatly appreciated if you
could spare one man for just one day to help on the project.
