Parents ask me if these vaccines are safe. Without
hesitation, I can answer that these vaccines are safe. In
the United States, the FDA must determine that a vaccine
is safe and effective before it is licensed. All three HPV
vaccines have been tested on thousands of people
around the world and so far, there are no serious side
effects that have occurred as a result of these vaccines.
As with other vaccines, the most common problem
occurs locally at the site of the injection. Soreness is
common. Sometimes fainting (syncope) occurs. There
is no risk of getting cancer from these vaccines.
The CDC and the Advisory Committee on Immunization
Practices (ACIP) now recommend that 11 and 12 year old
boys and girls receive two doses of the HPV vaccine at
least 6 months apart. This is a change from the previously
recommended three doses. If your child is over 14 years old,
three shots given over a six month period is recommended.
If your child's immune system is weakened or absent,
three doses of the vaccine (also given over a six month
period) are recommended between the ages of 9 and 26.

Think of HPV vaccines as cancer preventing vaccines.
Many parents think of it as vaccines that are needed for
sexually active children and since their children aren't
sexually active, why give them the vaccine? However, one
of my patient's mother recently said, "I'm not worried
about my children being sexually active at a young age.
I'm worried about what someone else might do to my
children and expose them to a virus that can cause them
to get cancer later." I couldn't agree with her more.
